Jyotish - the Science of Light

In the sacred language of Sanskrit, Jyotish, translates to the “science of light,”.

This ancient and mathematically precise astrological system finds its origins in ancient India. Often referred to as Vedic Astrology, Jyotish examines the planetary patterns in the universe and at the time of our birth, providing valuable insights into our life's journey. Through analysis of these cosmic influences, Jyotish empowers us to assess our strengths and understand our challenges realistically, helping us to realize our full potential. By forecasting the changing astrological weather and periods of our lives, Jyotish enables us to make clear and aligned choices. It also offers practical remedial measures to alleviate areas of difficulty and arouse the confidence to manifest our destiny and create happiness, harmony, and success on all levels.

Jyotish and Western Astrology: A Comparison

Jyotish is quite different from the commonly known Western Astrology. The key distinction lies in the zodiac system used by Jyotish – the sidereal zodiac, which is based on the fixed, observable positions of the constellations as they appear in the sky. Conversely, Western astrology employs the tropical zodiac, which is founded not on the fixed, observable positions of the constellations but on the relative and changeable position of the sun.

This divergence between the two astrological systems arises from a phenomenon known as "precession of equinoxes" and a wobble in the Earth's axial spin. As a result, the tropical positions have gradually shifted away from the fixed, sidereal constellations at a rate of approximately one degree every 72 years. By the time most of us were born, the tropical positions, and thus the Western astrology chart, have deviated from the fixed, observable positions by around 24 degrees. In essence, this is the difference between the two astrological systems.

The Ascendant: A Gateway to Understanding

In Jyotish, we approach astrology differently than in tropical astrology, where individuals are identified by their sun sign. Instead, we delve into the chart through the "ascendant," the constellation rising on the Eastern horizon at the time of a person's birth. The ascendant establishes the relationship between the planetary positions at birth and the birth event itself, offering insight into an individual's personality, physical body, and how they present themselves to the world.
